Thai Massage: Not for the faint of heart

Thai MassageYou go to the massage clinic. A therapist instructs you to disrobe and lie on the massage table, then she proceeds to kneading your tensed muscles with gentle strokes.

A massage can relax and calm your body. But aside from the obvious reasons, what other benefits can a massage give you?

When you hear the word massage, you usually visualize a place that is quiet, serene and relaxing. It has always been associated with relaxing scents, a quiet room and the sound of running water. However, there is a type of massage that is different from the usual massages you may have had in the past.

The Thai Massage

Developed and started in Thailand, Thai massage is a series of body manipulations that is influenced by India’s traditional medicinal techniques. It is also influenced by the movements associated with yoga.

So, what happens during a Thai massage? Like other full body massage therapies, Thai massage will require a massage bed for the whole session. It will not, however, require the client to disrobe. The client will change into loose, comfortable clothes since this type of massage will require stretching and being put into different positions.

A Thai massage is performed by a massage practitioner or a massage therapist. Aside from a firm mattress or bed, the client may also be asked to sit on a mat or on the floor.

Thai massage can be done in groups. The massage starts with a few subtle yoga-like movements and then escalates to the more complicated and complex positions. The massage therapist will guide you all throughout the process; he or she will be the one to direct you into yoga-like positions during the entire massage session.

Thai massage is not for those who cannot tolerate pain. It is somewhat painful if your body is not used to stretching, exercise or playing sports. Since Thai massage is a full body massage that will require you to do some serious stretching and bodywork, you have to be physically fit for it. Otherwise, you will end up with sore muscles.

What are the benefits of a Thai Massage?

A Thai massage is a kind of full body massage that can leave you exhausted and relaxed at the same time. It will make you feel as if you have had a thorough, all-day workout. It leaves you feeling refreshed and energized and it will make your body feel light.

Aside from this, Thai massage can also help in balancing your energy that can help promote the healing of any kind of physical ailment. The positions done during Thai massage help in the fresh circulation of oxygen throughout your body, which is beneficial to your health.

When getting a Thai massage, it is important to know what you’re in for. You certainly would not want the extreme yoga-like positions to catch you by surprise.
