Should you undress during a full body massage? Should you tip? What if you fall asleep? Below are the answers to some of the most common questions about massage that you may be too embarrassing to ask.
Should I remove my underwear?
You will not be forced to remove your underwear during a massage session especially if you are not comfortable with it. Many people prefer to have their underwear on while many others prefer to be completely nude. It is up to you whether you want to be dressed or not during the massage.
If your problem areas are your hips, lower back, buttocks or groin, clothes can sometimes get in the way but briefs for men and a thong for women should do the trick. If you do remove your underwear, the massage therapist will ensure that you are covered by a towel. The massage areas are the only ones that will be uncovered.
How often should I get a massage?
The best answer to this question is “depending on how often you can afford it”. It does not really matter how often you want it—as long as you enjoy it and you can easily afford the costs.
Ideally, however, you should have massage once a week but the decision should be according to what your massage therapist recommends and how your body feels. Some people are happy with massage sessions once a month, but you may need more frequent treatments if you have a health issue that benefits a massage. The best way to know is to talk to your massage therapist to determine the most suitable program that works for you.
How long does it take?
Massage therapy sessions vary in length depending on your needs, preferences and type of massage chosen. One session can last one hour up to three hours.
It is advisable that you arrive at the massage venue early to give yourself plenty of time for consultation and getting ready. This way, you will be able to enjoy your massage experience completely. Do not rush yourself away right after the massage so that the relaxation has more time to sink in.
What if I fall asleep in the middle of the session?
Remember that this is a very common occurrence. People usually fall into deep slumber during massage. Do not be shy to ask your massage therapist for a tissue in case you have drooled on the massage table. Since you are faced down during massage, this is normal and not something you need to be embarrassed about.
Should I tip?
There are no norms or ground rules when it comes to massage sessions as far as tipping is concerned. However, tips are always appreciated. The standard tip rate is 15% to 20% of the total bill. If you are hesitant or you are not sure, do not be shy to ask your therapist if tipping is customary. If you are not comfortable doing this face to face, call the spa ahead of time to find out about tipping rules.
